Peak Energy announced the establishment of a grid-scale sodium-ion battery manufacturing facility in Sacramento, California. The company has selected an 183,000-square-foot site at Metro Air Park, which should accommodate an annual production capacity of 4 gigawatt-hours.

With customer orders exceeding 6 gigawatt-hours secured, Peak is expected to commence production and shipments in the first quarter of 2027.

"This facility demonstrates that the U.S. can not only lead in technological innovation but also in large-scale manufacturing. With our manufacturing plant in Sacramento, we are driving American energy innovation, lowering electricity costs, and creating high-quality jobs."

Peak Energy will invest $71 million in the Sacramento plant, creating 239 new local jobs. After a competitive nationwide site selection process, Peak chose Sacramento due to factors such as the region's manufacturing talent pool, proximity to California's growing energy storage market, strong state and local support, and the leadership of the Greater Sacramento Economic Council in bringing together labor, utility, and economic development partners. Peak's expansion in California is supported by a $105 million CalCompetes tax credit, which was awarded in May 2026.

Peak plans to commercialize the first fully passive grid-scale energy storage system, designed to require no scheduled maintenance for 20 years and serve as a plug-and-play alternative to today's battery storage systems. Peak states that eliminating battery cooling costs alone could save users an average of $100 million annually in California, while also helping reduce overall storage costs and providing more affordable electricity.

To date, Peak has signed customer agreements with Jupiter Power, Energy Vault, and RWE Americas, and recently announced a strategic partnership with General Motors, including an investment from GM Ventures, pairing GM's next-generation sodium-ion battery technology with Peak's proprietary energy storage platform.
